Some Words of Advice
by
Geerten Meijsing
First you have to decide whether to read or to write. Well, I say: forget about the writing and start to read. One life time is too short already to collect what you need.
Writers should feel free to draw their characters from all of literature. A wealth of references to existing works would acquaint the reader instantaneously with the nature of each character, would obviate tiresome explanations and would effectively preclude mountebanks, upstarts, thimbleriggers and persons of inferior education from an understanding of contemporary literature.
Flann O'Brien
As far as Dutch literature goes - and that is not very far - here follow some DON'Ts. Don't even TRY this trash.
(On second thoughts I cancel this list. You can lay it out for yourself: everything you don't find in the opposite one.
Unluckily non-Dutch publishers have most times made the wrong decisions in doing translations. They are being misinformed, on an almost criminal scale, about what is and what ain't worth a fuck in our national literature.)
Wer die Schönheit angeschaut mit Augen, ist dem Tode schon anheimgegeben. (August Graf von Platen)
Expelled from Paradise: Bellagio, Lake Como
all dreams of the soul end in a beautiful men's or woman's body

'People often ask me if I have any words of advice - ahum, can I have a glass of water please - some words of advice for young people.
Well here follow some words of advice for young ánd old.'

D'autre part un écrivain a le devoir, et non pas seulement le droit, de se défendre, de ne pas laisser briser son inspiration, sa verve, de ne pas laisser déchirer, fût-ce par des ongles roses, le tissu délicat de son imagination créatrice. (Malaparte)
In einem kühlen Grunde
da geht ein Mühlenrad;
mein' Liebste ist verschwunden,
die dort gewohnet hat.

Sie hat mir Treu' versprochen,
gab mir ein'n Ring dabei;
ich hab die Treu' gebrochen,
mein Ringlein sprang entzwei.

Ich möcht' als Spielmann reisen
weit in die Welt hinaus
und singen meine Weisen
und gehn von Haus zu Haus.

Ich möcht' als Reiter fliegen
wohl in die blut'ge Schlacht,
und stille Feuer liegen
im Feld bei dunkler Nacht.

Hör' ich das Mühlrad gehen:
Ich weisz nicht, was ich will -
Ich möcht' am liebsten sterben:
da wär's auf einmal still!

(Josef Freiherr von Eichendorff)

Don't trust whores who don't ask for money. The only thing they want to get from you is móre money. (Uncle Bill)

It's no go the Yogi-Man, it's no go Blavatsky,
All we want is a bank balance and a bit of skirt in a taxi.
(Louis MacNeile)
